Video SEO for WordPress Users

June 29, 2024

Video content has become a crucial component of online marketing strategies. With the majority of internet traffic attributed to video consumption, optimizing your videos for search engines is essential.

This guide will walk you through the process of implementing video SEO on your WordPress website, helping you attract more visitors and improve your search rankings.

Understanding Video SEO

Video SEO involves actions designed to enhance the visibility and search engine rankings of your video content.

By optimizing your videos, you can increase their chances of appearing in various search results, including in the:

  • Main search results page
  • Video search tab
  • Google Images
  • Google Discover

Properly optimized video pages can also be displayed as rich snippets, featuring unique elements like Key Moments, which highlight important sections of your video.

Best Practices for Video SEO

To ensure the success of your video SEO efforts, follow Google's recommended best practices:

  • Create a dedicated page for each video to maximize its exposure and enable features like Key Moments or Live Badge. (This can be in your YouTube or Vimeo channel.)
  • Include a title, meta description, and a designated thumbnail image for each video.
  • Generate a video sitemap to facilitate the discovery and indexing of your videos by search engines.

Implementing Video SEO on WordPress

While video SEO may seem daunting, using an SEO plugin can simplify the process.

Browse WordPress.org to select a plugin.

Note that SEO plugins typically come in different versions. Be sure to select the version that includes a video sitemap and video schema.

For our example, we'll use the AIOSEO SEO plugin.

Step 1: Install and Set Up Your Plugin

Download and install the All in One SEO plugin.

A setup wizard will guide you through a few simple steps.

Note that you'll need the Pro version of AIOSEO to access the video sitemap feature.

Step 2: Enable Video Sitemap

Once AIOSEO is installed, the plugin will automatically generate an XML sitemap and an RSS/Atom sitemap.

To enable your video sitemap, navigate to AIOSEO » Sitemaps in your WordPress admin bar.

Click on the Video Sitemap tab.

Then click Enable sitemap.

And click the blue Save Changes button.

AIOSEO will now detect embedded videos on your site and add their information to the sitemap.

Step 3: Optimize Your Video Page

To optimize the WordPress page where your video is embedded, open the page in the editor and click on the AIOSEO button in the top-right corner to access the plugin's sidebar.

In the General tab, you'll find recommendations for improving your on-page SEO.

These recommendations are organized by

  • Focus Keyphrase
  • Basic SEO
  • Title, and
  • Readability.

Follow the instructions provided to boost your SEO score.

Step 4: Apply Video Schema Markup

Schema markup helps search engines understand your content and rank it for relevant queries.

To add video schema to your page, click on the Schema tab in the AIOSEO sidebar.

Now you'll see the Schema in Use section.

Click the Generate Schema button.

Now locate and clic the Video schema button in the Schema Catalog.

Then fill out the Video Schema form with your video's metadata, including name, description, content URL, embed URL, upload date, family-friendliness, and thumbnail.

Step 5: Consider Adding a Video Transcript (Optional)

For dedicated video pages, adding a transcript can further enhance your SEO and provide users with an alternative way to consume your content.

YouTube can generate a basic transcript. But these often include errors. You can instead opt to upload your own transcript.

You can use AI-based transcription services or APIs like Deepgram or AssemblyAI.com to generate transcripts efficiently.

Note that the latter will require technical skills.

Optimize Your YouTube Description

If you're hosting your videos on YouTube, optimize your YouTube descriptions as well.

Include relevant keywords and a detailed description to help your video rank well in YouTube's internal search results.

Think about the search terms your target audience might use when looking for a video on the topic you've covered. Incorporate those keywords in your description.

One of the most common mistakes in doing SEO for YouTube is skipping the description altogether or entering minimal information.

Use Time Stamps

Now, once you've grown your subscriber list, the description may not be as important. For instance, the All-In podcast has over half a million YouTube subscribers.

They optimize their titles, but don't always have long descriptions.

Do not, for long-form interviews and podcasts, adding time stamps to your description can boost engagement. These stamps make it easy for users to navigate the intefview and jump to segments that interest them.

Comparing Manual Video SEO vs. Using a Plugin

While it's possible to manage video SEO manually, using a plugin will save you time and effort.

As we've seen, a good plugin automates tasks like generating video sitemaps, adding schema markup, and providing on-page SEO recommendations.

Most top SEO plugins also provide customer support, making it an excellent choice for beginners.
